About This Recipe Analysis
Each recipe on RecipeDatabase is scientifically analyzed using the USDA FoodData Central database. We track 21 nutrients per ingredient, compute per-serving totals, and generate a Health Score from 0 to 100. The score rewards fiber, protein density, micronutrient coverage, and Mediterranean diet alignment, while penalizing excess sodium, saturated fat, and added sugar.
The interactive dashboard above shows macronutrient breakdown as % Daily Value, a micronutrient radar chart covering 9 vitamins and minerals, ingredient-level calorie heatmaps, and 8 clinical health badges (High Protein, High Fiber, Under 500 kcal, Heart Healthy, Diabetic Friendly, Low Sodium, Potassium Rich, Mediterranean Aligned). Every recipe also has an algorithmically optimized “Lighter” variant that preserves cultural authenticity while improving the health score.
All % Daily Values are based on the FDA's 2020 reference intakes for a 2,000 kcal diet. Read our full scoring methodology for details.
Data Sources & Methodology
Our nutritional data comes from the USDA FoodData Central Foundation Foods and Survey Foods databases, covering over 7,500 food items with laboratory-verified nutrient profiles. Each recipe ingredient is mapped to its closest USDA entry through a 3,918-entry ingredient dictionary built via automated matching and manual curation. This ensures accurate calorie counts, macronutrient splits, vitamin levels, and mineral content for every dish.
The radar chart on this page visualizes nine key micronutrients — Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin D, Calcium, Iron, Potassium, Magnesium, Zinc, and Folate — as percentages of their FDA Daily Values per serving. Recipes that fill the radar chart across multiple axes indicate a nutrient-dense meal, while narrow spikes suggest strength in only one or two nutrients.
The calorie heatmap table breaks down each ingredient's contribution to total calories, helping identify which components dominate the energy profile. Combined with the macro dashboard showing protein, fat, carbohydrate, fiber, sodium, and sugar levels, this gives a comprehensive view of the recipe's nutritional character. Use the compare tool to see how the lighter variant improves on the original by reducing saturated fat, sodium, or sugar while maintaining flavor authenticity.
